| Description: | Erect shrublet or large shrub, up to 1.4 m high. Branches thick, up to 80 mm in diameter in old plants; blade broadly ovate to orbicular, 9-19 x 10-28 mm, margin minutely toothed, undulate, glabrous; spines curved towards apex, stalks blunt and swollen; petals 8-21 mm, dark rose to purple. (from PlantZAfrica website) A smallish, spiky shrub with thick, succulent branches. It is characterised by its hard, translucent bark, which is impregnated with wax and inflammable.
